Test of post editor including videos with start times

this is some brand new stuff in a chunk styled as Paragraph

this one is styled as Normal

This one is a Minor Heading

This one is a Subheading

This one is a Heading

This one is a Major Heading

This is the alt text

This is automatically a "Normal" after hitting the Enter key on the heading above. It is a little bit longer paragraph to see what it looks like. I want to have at least a couple of paragraphs of this "Normal" text. After that, I will put some in using the "Paragraph" style.

So this paragraph will be changed from Normal to Paragraph style. But first I'm adding a few more words so that the difference will hopefully be more evident. We'd like to test all this stuff on a dummy post like this so it can give us a feel for how things will come together later.

This is another with Paragraph style. The only difference that I see is the addition of blank space before the start of this paragraph, eliminating the need for an extra line in between. Of course, that can be useful because it will be easier to style in the future if ever desired.

Once I get going on paragraphs, it's a piece of cake. They flow nicely, without even a second thought. But what happens when we add some different formatting. I'll make first letter on this paragraph Lobster font. And in this line I underline a few words. It's also good to be able to add some emphasis where needed. Notably, I was able to do that using Ctrl-I without having to go up the the Italic item on the toolbar. That's worth blaring boldly: Ctrl-B made this part bold! And here is some with red background behind the text. And how about a little blue text in this sentence. Or even red text on a green background? Of course, it wouldn't be hypertext without a link to the definition of the word.

My next test is to add an image. I will put it up above, so hopefully the text will flow around it. I selected one very easily from my Google photos. It came in centered. But I clicked on it to reveal a little toolbar below. I click the icon to left justify it. Then the text flowed around it just fine. I find that I can drag it and it gets positioned at a break between paragraphs. There is also a caption button on the toolbar.

I see there is a button to insert video, so here we go. This should be one from our Columbus church singing Fences last Sunday. It seems easy to insert the video, but thus far I'm not able to get it to include the start time. It seems easy to move the video in between any two paragraphs. However, the text does not flow along side even aligned right or left, so might as well center it.

But, by switching to HTML view, I could modify the source link of the video to include the start time (i.e., "?&t=936"). But it is an "embed" style YouTube link and that doesn't work. :( It will be interesting to see if all the reformatting I did in HTML view to make the code more readable is maintained after this trip thru COMPOSE view. And indeed, it appears to be. all the respacing of the elements has maintained as I add this sentence in HTML view.

This paragraph is Normal.
Here is another Normal paragraph.

Here is some more Normal text.
These bits of Normal don't get a space between automatically. You have to add the line explicitly.

One more Normal.

I switched back to Paragraph here. It seems that we might want to get in the habit of using Paragraph for everything except special instances that require something unusual.

Now I'll try a couple of different YouTube link formats to see if I can get it to accept a start time parameter.

  • This will be a video just using the standard COMPOSE view video button:
  • Now will try same, and then modify the src link to add the start time as "?&t=937s". And we see the video still plays, but still from the beginning:
  • Next try putting in the watch style link that does work with the time spec. And it seems to bring back the right thumbnail here in the editor, but after publishing, the article just contains a sad face. Note that a trip to the COMPOSE view and back here to HTML view has changed the ampersand to its HTML Entity equivalent:
  • What will I do next? Google it, of course. And read this Livewire article. Now we see the easy way to discover the link is by using the SHARE button on the YouTube screen with the video. Choose the EMBED method of sharing. Then, on the screen that shows the code, click the "Start at" checkbox. Voila. The entire iframe tag is given. Just copy it and paste it into below to see the difference:

  • Note that here in the editor it doesn't show the thumbnail image. However, once published it worked fine. So I added it a third time, this time making the height, width, class, and youtube-src-id attributes match those on the original iframe. That seems to have gotten it looking correct here in the editor. And indeed, once published, it starts at the correct time.
  • It's a little tricky to get from a video insertion back to the next bullet point. Instead of using ENTER to move on, seems you first have to hit a side arrow. Then a blank line has to be deleted. But, okay. Won't do this very often.
